Adult psychiatry referrals: a quick guide for GPs
What to send, when to refer, what your patient experiences, and how shared care works. A two-minute read for GPs considering a referral to our clinic.
For referrers
We accept referrals for adults aged 17 and over for psychiatric assessment, ADHD assessment and ongoing shared care at our clinic in Blackburn, in Melbourne's east. Send your usual referral letter by HealthLink, fax or email, addressed to ‘The Psychiatrist at Outcome Health’, and we'll acknowledge it in writing within 48 hours.
Where to send it
Use whichever channel is quickest from your practice software. There's no online form to fill in.
A current referral from a GP or Nurse Practitioner is required for your patient to claim a Medicare rebate. Our fees and estimated rebates are on the fee schedule.
What to include
Beyond a current referral, none of this is mandatory, but the more you include up front, the sooner we can book your patient in. If anything is missing, we'll ask you for it.
For ADHD assessments, if any investigation comes back abnormal, please manage it through your practice before we book the patient in.
After you send it
You receive written confirmation within 48 hours, with the expected timing for your patient's first appointment.
Our intake nurse reviews the referral against our scope. If the patient sits outside it, we tell you at this point so you can redirect them without a wait, and if anything is missing we come back to you for it.
Our intake nurses contact your patient directly to talk through the process and book the first appointment.
Your patient sees one of our Mental Health Nurse Practitioners for a 60 to 90 minute intake, then one of our psychiatrists. You get a consultation letter after every visit.
Clinical questions
If you're not sure a referral is appropriate, call Kate Cogan, our Mental Health Nurse, on (03) 8822 8444 before you send it.
Scope and wait
We see adults aged 17 and over for ADHD, mood and anxiety disorders, trauma-related presentations and medication review. We don't provide tertiary mental health care or care for acute psychosis or acute suicidality, and we don't take child and adolescent, NDIS or medico-legal referrals. The full list of what we see and what we don't is on the referrers page.
The wait for a first appointment is typically 3–4 weeks. ADHD assessments may have a slightly longer queue, and we confirm the timing for your patient when we acknowledge the referral.
